phoenix international raceway

Located in Avondale, Arizona the phoenix international raceway or just PIR for short is one of the most interesting race tracks built. In 1964 pheonix international raceway was constructed out of the Estrella Mountain foothills as the new premiere racing course in American open wheel racing. Later on in 1988 Nascar brought the Sprint Cup Series racing to PIR and that was all the racing complex needed to become a major sporting attraction for the “Valley of the Sun.”
The most distinguishable feature of Phoenix International Raceway, that has to be mentioned, is the “Hillside”. Just outside of turn four this area high above the race track provides a point of view that only a limited amount of spectators out of the 76,800 fans, the track can hold, ever get a chance to see. PIR sits in the center of the Estrella Mountains and provides some incredible back drops for the race driver and their fans.
