How Do You Become An Ambulance Technician

Consider pursuing a job in a more stable field like the medical industry and the initial question becomes  how do i become a ambulance technician?  Well obtaining the education necessary to hold a job as an Ambulance Technician isn’t a process that requires you to invest years into, so getting into this type of work can be just a few months away in most cases.

The first step is getting enrolled into a formal training program. This type of training is typically called Emergency Medical Technician or a EMT course.  Completing your certification in one of these programs can start with basic level and if you decide to go further you can proceed onto the intermediate and paramedic levels.  To locate one of these EMT programs in your state try starting with your local vocational school or community college.  Even some of your near by medical facilities, police and fire academies will offer a Ambulance Technician program.  These certification programs have several levels ranging from EMT-B, EMT-Intermediate, EMT-Paramedic/ Degree Program and a Associate in Emergency Medical Technology.  So as you can see there is plenty of room for you to progress your career beyond the entry level if you find that you really love the job.

A entry level Ambulance Technician will be taught to respond to emergency medical situations, along side a paramedic, with primary responsibilities requiring that a responder be able to assess a patients condition and handle basic emergencies not excluding respiratory issues, cardiac arrest and simple trauma.  At this level you will also learn to administer intravenous fluids, operate airway devices and the dispensing of some medications.  Some states will also require that you have completed an Emergency Vehicle Operators Course or EVOC for short.

Now once you have finished an EMT training program you then have to get certified.  All states will require that you become certified as an Ambulance Technician before you can start applying for positions.  The most notable and recognized organization that you can seek out for certification is the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians ( www.nremt.org), but also some states do self administer their own certification exams so this may be an option for you as well depending on where you live.  As of now the exam typically will consist of a  one part cognitive computer based test and a second part psycho motor test that both must be passed in order to get your certification.  Because your role as an emergency responder is so critical you are required to apply for recertification every two years.
