The most historic stock car racing results can probably be traced back before the inception of Nascar in 1948.  Originating with moonshine runners during the years of prohibition, it was critical that you had a fast car so that you could elude the police.  This need for speed  kept drivers constantly in search of a way to upgrade the speed and performance of their cars.

It was only a natural progression that these guys would soon begin challenging each other to races and that led to organized events somewhere around the 1930’s.  Later on around 1950 Oldsmobile introduce the Rocket V8, which was the first overhead valve (OHV) engine to be made available to the public, and that got stock car racing off and going in a major way.  Being that automobile manufacturers couldn’t overlook that the victories by Oldsmobile led to a increase in sales of its non racing public automobiles.  So other car manufacturers eventually got on board driven by the motto: “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday”.
