Starting back in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s the American drifting phenomenon got its start and soon led to the development of formula drift. Originating from the underground sport in Japan called canyon racing and drifting as we know it sparked the enthusiastic support of drivers here in the state.

The Sanctioned SCCA autocross was the first to embrace drifting and gave drivers a chance to master their skills maneuvering through very aggressive turns.  Following this drifters were allowed to compete in road racing events with the SCCA, NASA and Speed Trial USA which helped them improve their ability to control these cars safely at high rates of speeds.

In June of 2003 Slipstream Global Marketing jumped into the game and played a primary role in starting up pro drifting in the U.S.  American drifters officially debut with Japanese drifting professionals, as well as other drifters around the world, in a competitions that pitted skill against skill.  Japanese drivers due to experience prevailed but the American drifters show that they would be up to the challenge and eventually be very competitive and this led to sponsors, race tracks and most importantly the public taking interest and allowing the drifting movement to pick up momentum.

The success of this earlier event led to Slipstream launching a subsidiary company , in November of the same year at the SEMA show, called Formula Drift, Inc.  This company went on to launch and operate North Americas first official drifting series going by the title Formula Drift or Formula D. Inaugural race events took the place the following year attracting sponsorship from around the world.
