- Change a Tire On a Car Step By Step
Here is a diagram of changing a tire that you can use as a visual guide line for changing your own tire if you hadn’t never done it before. The first thing you need to do is locate your cars spare tire, tire iron and jack. In most cars they will be stored somewhere within your trunk area and for trucks and suvs try looking in the tailgate area or underneath the rear end of the vehicle itself.
The next thing you want to do is put your car in park and set the emergency brake so that you can remove the tire. Take the tire iron ( L shaped bar ) and use it to loosen each wheel lug. Don’t be surprised if it takes some muscle to untighten the lug nuts. Also, the flat edge side of the tire iron can be use to pop the hub cap off if you have one on your wheel. Once you have done this, take your jack and position it under your car ( read your owners manual for suggestions on the best place to position the jack ) and now you can begin raising the jack and the car.
Lift the car until the flat tire is off the ground at which point you can remove the wheel lugs completely and take the tire off. Put the spare tire on and replace the lug nuts by screwing them on using your hands to get them tight. When all the lugs are on hand tight go ahead and lower the jack and car back down. Remove the jack from beneath the car and now take your tire iron and tighten all the lug nuts completely.
That’s all to it, put your flat tire, jack and tire iron back in the trunk and you’re ready to go. One piece of advice to remember with a typical spare tire, they are usually smaller than the regular tire so you shouldn’t drive as fast as you would on the normal tire. In most cases the top speed for your spare tire will be written on the sidewall, so don’t forget to check it before driving off.
